Check off your equipment list and don't forget that less is more when you are the one carrying it! The following outlines how we are currently minimising, removing and recycling waste, reducing energy consumption, increasing water efficiency, using sustainable products and supporting conservation initiatives. At the lodges we reduce the amount of waste produced by purchasing products in bulk and therefore reducing the amount of packaging. We recycle all materials where possible for example, old towels are used for rags, old equipment is donated to organisations such as schools, lost property items go to the Salvation Army. We ensure that the heat energy released from our electricity generators at the lodges is harnessed for efficient drying rooms.
We educate our staff and customers on the importance of conservation and encourage them to be actively involved in conservation practises. We understand the vital roles that each of our staff members play in the operation and strive to ensure that the work place is a safe and rewarding one. The sustainable practises of the company are an integral part of the staff training process. The Milford Routeburn Tracks are the best known of the 9 Great Walks designated by the Department of Conservation. Ultimate Hikes acquired the concession to operate on the Milford Track in 1992.
Over 120 people are employed each walking season to ensure that the service provided exceeds our walker's expectations. Ultimate Hikes also operates guided day walks on the Milford, and Routeburn Tracks. The Ultimate Hikes Centre is your one stop destination in Queenstown for all your hiking needs. It is all of these people who make Ultimate Hikes the adventure of a lifetime for our walkers. Noel and his family have been living in Queenstown for 12 years, the past 8 years working at Ultimate Hikes. Having guided on all our walks, he now heads up track operations, overseeing, guides, lodges and the track maintenance and safety operations, ensuring all our walks are operated in a safe, informative and enjoyable manner. Robert has been involved with Ultimate Hikes since 1982, originally based in Te Anau.
His passion for being in the mountains and sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with the walkers has kept him coming back so this year we decided to keep him. He now leads the guiding team, imparting to them his knowledge and passion, while keeping up the strong tradition of safety and good kiwi hospitality. Chris has been living in Queenstown for over 26 years and enjoys being part of the Ultimate Hikes Reservations Team based in the Queenstown office. She loves being able to assist and share her knowledge and passion for the guided walks and Queenstown area and finds it very rewarding watching the walkers disembark from the coach at the end of their adventure, knowing she has been a small part of their Ultimate Hikes experience. Margot has spent 8 years at Ultimate Hikes, researching and purchasing the latest styles and products for sale in the Ultimate Hikes Centre.
