What you should know about Warbirds Over Wanaka
Internationally renowned for its glaciers and magnificent tramping and climbing, it is nestled on the shores of an azure blue lake amongst the mighty peaks of the Southern Alps. Wanaka remains the alpine jewel in an area on the border of Mount Aspiring National Park, a world class heritage area covering thousands of square hectares stretching from Makarora in the north to South Westland on the West Coast and south to the wilds of Fiordland. Wanaka walking and cycling tracks go from Glendhu Bay following around the lake edge to Wanaka, Albert Town to the Red Bridge near Luggate. This alpine resort features over 30 restaurants and has all the amenities to satisfy the most discerning visitor.
Centrally situated, visitors have a choice of accommodation and are within four hours drive of three international airports. In 1988 aviation entrepreneur Sir Tim Wallis shared his passion for Warbirds and Classic Aircraft with the public by creating an Airshow that is now a biennial centre piece of Central Otago’s tourist attractions. The first airshow and country fair attracted 14,00 visitors to Wanaka Airport. Delighted with this success, he decided to expand on the theme and hold a biennial event over the long Easter weekend.
As the show grew so did its support and now around 50,00 people make the pilgrimage to Wanaka for their weekend of excitement. In 2006 the Warbirds Over Wanaka Community Trust Board was established to ensure Sir Tim Wallis’s legacy continues to develop and grow in Wanaka.
